North Bergen stretches from apartment buildings along Boulevard East, on top of the Palisades, to houses and apartment complexes farther west toward the Meadowlands. Secaucus, next door, is a town of houses, townhouse and condo communities and warehouses, with the New Jersey Turnpike and Route 3 running through it. The two towns handle parking very differently, so here is each one in turn.
North Bergen: reserving space for the truck
In North Bergen, the Parking Authority handles metered spaces and the police handle residential streets (North Bergen Parking Authority: meter rentals and temporary no parking signs):
- Metered block: send the Authority’s Meter Rental Request Form at least 72 hours before the date you need. The Authority posts the signs or bags at least 48 hours ahead and removes them after the date. Changes after the signs are printed cost extra.
- Residential street: the Authority says to contact the North Bergen Police Department at (201) 392-2100.
- The office is at 4225 Bergen Turnpike, (201) 869-6200, Monday to Friday 9 AM to 4 PM.
The Authority also says commercial vehicles may not park in the township unless they are actively serving a township resident or business (North Bergen Parking Authority: commercial vehicles). Plan for the truck to be there only while the crew is working, and to load and unload on the same day.
Secaucus: ask before moving day
Many Secaucus streets are marked “Parking for Residents Only” under Chapter 127A of the town code, and only cars with a valid residential parking sticker may stay there longer than the time allowed (Secaucus Police Department: Resident Parking). The town does not publish a moving-truck sign process online, so call the Secaucus Police Department non-emergency line, (201) 330-2060, a week or more before the move and ask how to hold curb space for the truck.
In condo and townhouse communities, the association usually sets its own move rules. Ask the management office about move hours, where the truck can park, whether there is an elevator to book and whether they need a certificate of insurance (COI). Send us the sample COI about a week ahead; our COI and elevator checklist lists what to ask.
Parking your own car after the move
- North Bergen: every resident must register their license plate to park a non-commercial vehicle in the township. New residents can register online for a two-month (60-day) permit while they update their documents; proof can be, for example, a deed or HUD-1 statement dated within the last 60 days or a yearly lease (North Bergen Parking Authority: new resident permit).
- Secaucus: residential parking permits are applied for online only, there is no fee, and permits are mailed. You need your driver’s license and vehicle registration; if your license does not show your Secaucus address, add one proof of residency dated within the past three months, such as a PSE&G bill. Permits are not issued to anyone with outstanding traffic violations or a suspended license or registration.
- New to New Jersey? You have 60 days to transfer an out-of-state license and registration (NJ MVC). See our Hudson County resident parking guide for the other towns.
Getting there and moving on
From Manhattan, the Lincoln Tunnel is the closest crossing; trucks must fit its 13-foot height limit and cannot use the center tube (Port Authority Truckers Guide, April 2026). Leaving the area? Our guides cover moves north to Westchester and Connecticut and west to Morris County. Moving a few miles south instead? See Union City and West New York.
Plan the stairs and the big pieces
Many houses here have basements, attics or garages, and in larger buildings the walk from the elevator to the door can be long. Before the estimate, walk through each floor, note what goes and what stays, and measure the biggest pieces against the narrowest door. The more we know before moving day, the better we can plan the crew and the truck.
Licensed for your move
A move that starts and ends in New Jersey is an in-state move. State law requires movers who do in-state moves to be licensed by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, and you can check any mover’s license by calling the Division at (800) 242-5846 (NJ Division of Consumer Affairs). A & A Alliance Moving Inc, a family business since 1999, holds NJPM 000930 for New Jersey moves, NYSDOT 34875 for New York moves, and U.S. DOT 967970 / MC-432549 for moves between states (FMCSA record).
