Moving to Bayonne, NJ: No-Parking Signs, Permits and Bridge Limits

Bayonne is a long, narrow city at the southern end of Hudson County, with water on three sides. Many homes are two- and three-family houses on numbered streets, and newer apartment buildings have gone up on old commercial land. A Bayonne move needs one thing planned early: the no-parking signs for the truck, which come from the police.

How to get no-parking signs in Bayonne

The Bayonne Police Department sets out the process on its no-parking page (Bayonne Police Department: No-Parking signs):

  1. Fill out the request form and e-mail it to the Traffic Unit at worksites@bayonnepd.org. Send each request on its own, not in an e-mail chain. In the subject line write “No-Parking Sign Request”, the location and the dates the signs will be active.
  2. Pick up the signs at the Bayonne Police Traffic Unit at the Bayonne Central Garage. The page lists office hours of Monday to Friday, 7 AM to 2 PM. Signs are available only there.
  3. Pay the fee by money order or certified check only; no cash and no credit cards. The fee is charged per sign, per parking space, per day, and a parking space here means up to 18 feet of legal curb.
  4. Post the signs at least 48 hours before the start time, and keep them up. Posting and upkeep are your job. Put them along the curb on poles, trees, stakes or cones where they can be clearly seen; plastic wrap protects them from rain.
  5. Take every sign down when the move is over. Expired signs left up can bring a summons for each sign.

Only signs issued by the Traffic Unit are valid; homemade signs are removed. If the space is on a metered block, call the Bayonne Parking Utility at 201-858-6135 to arrange meter bags. If a car is parked in your reserved space on moving day, call Police Dispatch at 201-858-6900.

Because the signs must be up 48 hours ahead and the Traffic Unit office is open on weekdays only, plan to request and pick up your signs early in the week before a weekend move.

How much curb to reserve

A moving truck needs room for its full length plus space behind it to open the doors and use the ramp or lift gate, which is usually more than one 18-foot space. Tell us the address when you book and we can talk through how many spaces to request for the truck we send.

Parking your own car after the move

  • Bayonne residents apply for a virtual residential parking permit online, in person or by mail. The city says you do not need a parking permit on weekends (City of Bayonne: Parking Utility).
  • Since 2025, the city enforces its residential zone parking rules 24 hours a day (City of Bayonne notice).
  • Moving into a new building? Under Bayonne Ordinance 7-17.8, people living in developments in a redevelopment area whose plan was adopted on or after January 15, 2015 cannot get residential parking permits. Those buildings were expected to provide on-site parking, so ask your building about a space before you move.
  • New to New Jersey? You have 60 days to transfer an out-of-state license and registration (NJ MVC). Our Hudson County resident parking guide has the other towns.

Bridges, tunnels and routes

The Bayonne Bridge links Bayonne with Staten Island; the Port Authority lists a height limit of 13 feet 6 inches there. Toward Manhattan, the Holland Tunnel allows trucks up to 12 feet 6 inches with two or three axles on a single unit, and the Lincoln Tunnel allows trucks up to 13 feet outside the center tube (Port Authority Truckers Guide, April 2026). For Brooklyn, our Hoboken to Brooklyn truck routes guide explains the two ways across, through Lower Manhattan or around through Staten Island; from Bayonne, the Staten Island way starts at the Bayonne Bridge. Licensed for your move

A move that starts and ends in New Jersey is an in-state move. State law requires movers who do in-state moves to be licensed by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, and you can check any mover’s license by calling the Division at (800) 242-5846 (NJ Division of Consumer Affairs). A & A Alliance Moving Inc, a family business since 1999, holds NJPM 000930 for New Jersey moves, NYSDOT 34875 for New York moves, and U.S. DOT 967970 / MC-432549 for moves between states (FMCSA record).
