Hoboken to Brooklyn looks like a short hop across the harbor, but a moving truck cannot take the roads many drivers use. There are two practical truck routes, and the right one depends on the time of day and the size of the truck.
Route 1: through Lower Manhattan
The truck crosses into Manhattan through the Holland Tunnel. The Port Authority allows only two- and three-axle single-unit trucks in the Holland Tunnel, and it has a lower height limit than the Lincoln Tunnel (Port Authority Truckers Guide (rates effective Jan 4, 2026)). Port Authority tolls are collected when entering New York (Port Authority Truckers Guide (rates effective Jan 4, 2026)).
From there the truck crosses Lower Manhattan, which is inside the MTA’s Congestion Relief Zone south of 60th Street, where tolls apply to vehicles entering the zone (MTA). It reaches Brooklyn through the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, which has a 12 ft 1 in height limit (MTA Bridges and Tunnels).
Route 2: around through Staten Island
The other way stays out of Manhattan: south through Bayonne to the Bayonne Bridge, across Staten Island, and over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn. On a heavy traffic day in Lower Manhattan, this longer loop can be the steadier trip.
Roads a moving truck cannot use
The Belt Parkway is on NYC DOT’s list of roads closed to commercial vehicles (NYC DOT), so the truck uses streets and expressways that allow trucks. That is one reason truck travel times differ from what a car’s map app shows.
Booking the curb at both ends
- Hoboken: order Temporary No Parking signs online at least ten days before the move, at least two signs per order (City of Hoboken).
- Brooklyn: many brownstones have a stoop and narrow stairs, and many apartment buildings set move hours, elevator reservations and a COI. Ask your new building early and send us its sample COI a week before.
Licensed for New Jersey to New York
This move crosses a state line, so federal rules apply. A & A Alliance Moving Inc, a family business since 1999, holds U.S. DOT No. 967970 and MC-432549 for moves between states, plus NJPM 000930 and NYSDOT 34875. You can look up our record on the FMCSA website, and the federal guides Ready to Move? and Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move explain your rights on an interstate move.
After you move, New York gives new residents 30 days to exchange an out-of-state driver license (NY DMV).
Common questions
Can a moving truck use the Belt Parkway from Hoboken to Brooklyn?
No. NYC DOT lists the Belt Parkway among roads closed to commercial vehicles, so the truck uses roads that allow trucks.
Which way will the truck go?
Either through Lower Manhattan (Holland Tunnel, then the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel) or around through Staten Island (Bayonne Bridge, then the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge). We choose by the day, the traffic and the truck.
Are there tolls on this move?
Port Authority tolls are collected when entering New York, and the route through Lower Manhattan enters the MTA Congestion Relief Zone, where tolls apply. Your written estimate tells you what is included.
