High-rise and mid-rise buildings along the Hoboken waterfront run moves on a schedule. Management decides when you can move, which elevator you get and what paperwork the mover must send first. Miss one step and the crew waits in the lobby. Here is the order we recommend.
Three to four weeks before
- Ask management for the building’s move rules in writing: allowed days, start and finish times, and the loading area.
- Ask for the sample certificate of insurance (COI). Buildings often want to be named on the certificate exactly as the sample shows.
- Ask if there is a move deposit or a walkthrough before and after.
Two weeks before
- Reserve the service elevator for a block of time that covers loading, plus a cushion.
- If the truck will park on the street rather than at a loading dock, order Temporary No Parking signs online through the Hoboken Parking Utility. The city asks for at least ten days’ notice and at least two signs per order (City of Hoboken).
- Book your mover for the start time the building allows.
One week before
- Send the sample COI to your mover. We send the certificate your building asks for, so management has it before moving day.
- Confirm the elevator time with the front desk or the super.
- Pack everything that is not furniture. Crews move fastest when every loose item is in a labeled box.
Moving day
- Do a quick walkthrough of the hallway and elevator with the super before the first item moves.
- Keep valuables, documents and medicine with you, not on the truck.
- At the end, walk the route again so the deposit can be released.

If you are staying in New Jersey
A move that stays inside New Jersey is an in-state move. Common questions
What is a COI and who sends it?
A certificate of insurance shows the building that the mover carries insurance for the job. Ask management for their sample and send it to us about a week before; we send the certificate the building asks for.
Do I need street parking signs if the building has a loading dock?
Ask management whether the truck can use the dock. If the truck will park on the street, Hoboken asks you to order Temporary No Parking signs online at least ten days ahead.
How long should I reserve the elevator for?
Reserve a block that covers the whole loading time plus a cushion. Tell us the number of rooms and large pieces and we will tell you how long loading usually takes for a move like yours.
