Moving Within Hoboken: A Same-Town Move Checklist

A move inside Hoboken is short on the map and long on details. There are two buildings with two sets of rules, often two sets of stairs, and one stretch of curb you need for the truck at each end. This is how we plan a same-town move so the day runs on time.

1. Hold the curb on both blocks

Hoboken holds street space for moving trucks with Temporary No Parking (TNP) signs from the Hoboken Parking Utility. The city asks you to order them online through HPU Online at least ten days before the move. Each sign covers about 15 feet, and every order needs at least two signs (City of Hoboken). For a move inside town you usually want signs at the old address and at the new one, so place both orders on the same day.

Our separate guide on how temporary no-parking signs work covers where to place them and what to do if a car is still parked there.

2. Count the stairs and measure the tight turns

Many Hoboken homes are brownstones and walk-ups with narrow staircases. Before your estimate, count the flights at both addresses, note any tight landings, and measure your largest pieces against the narrowest doorway: sofa, dresser, bed frame, desk. These numbers tell us how many movers to send and which pieces to take apart and put back together.

3. Ask both buildings the same three questions

  • Which days and hours are moves allowed?
  • Is there an elevator to reserve, and does it need wall pads?
  • Do you need a certificate of insurance (COI), and can you send your sample?

Send us each building’s sample COI about a week before the move and we send the certificate it asks for.

4. Choose the day with care

Month-end weekends fill up first across Hoboken and Jersey City. If your lease allows it, a weekday or a mid-month date makes it easier to get the curb, the elevator and the arrival time you want.

5. Pack as if the trip were longer

A short drive still means stairs, doorways and loading. Wrap furniture, box loose items, label every box with the room it goes to, and keep one “open first” box with you: chargers, medicine, documents, a few tools and snacks.
