Moving to Weehawken, NJ: Parking Rules and Moving-Day Planning

Weehawken is small, but a move there can be two very different jobs. Down on the waterfront you find newer elevator buildings and townhouses; up on top of the Palisades, the streets are lined with older houses and apartment buildings with stairs. What is the same everywhere in town is the parking system, run by the Weehawken Parking Authority. Here is what it means for a moving truck and for your own car.

Weehawken parking rules in plain words

The Weehawken Parking Authority runs a residential parking program. Its enforcement page sets these rules (Weehawken Parking Authority: Enforcement):

  • Daytime: a vehicle without a valid Weehawken permit may park for up to four hours between 7 AM and 10 PM (9 PM on Boulevard East). After that it can be ticketed.
  • Overnight on Boulevard East: from 9 PM to 7 AM, every vehicle parked there needs a Weehawken resident sticker or visitor permit.
  • Overnight on every other street: the same rule applies from 10 PM to 7 AM.
  • The four-hour grace period does not run past 9 PM on Boulevard East or 10 PM on other streets.

What that means for the moving truck

A big move can take more than four hours at one address, and a moving truck has no Weehawken permit. The Parking Authority’s website does not publish a temporary no parking sign process like Hoboken’s, so call the Authority at 201-863-1523 a week or more before the move. Ask two questions: how to hold curb space for the truck, and how to keep the truck legal if loading runs past four hours. The office is at 4200 Park Avenue. Its posted hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8 AM to 4 PM and Tuesday and Thursday 8 AM to 7 PM; it is closed on weekends (Weehawken Parking Authority: hours).

A few more things help:

  • Start early in the day, so the job ends well before the 9 PM or 10 PM overnight rules.
  • Ask your building where trucks load. Many waterfront buildings have a loading area and a set move window.
  • Ask management for the building’s sample certificate of insurance (COI) and send it to us about a week ahead. Our high-rise COI and elevator checklist lists what to ask.

The Lincoln Tunnel is in Weehawken

For a move between Weehawken and Manhattan, the Lincoln Tunnel is the short way across, but trucks must fit its limits: a height limit of 13 feet and no trucks in the center tube (Port Authority Truckers Guide, April 2026). We send a truck that fits the route. Traffic near the tunnel can back up at rush hours, so a mid-morning start is often the easier choice.

Moving between Weehawken and Hoboken or Jersey City is a short drive, but each town has its own parking rules. See our guides to Hoboken temporary no parking signs and moving in Jersey City.

Stairs up top, elevators on the water

On top of the cliffs, many homes are walk-ups with narrow stairs and tight turns. Count the flights, measure the doorway and your biggest pieces, and tell us at the estimate, so we send enough movers and can take furniture apart and put it back together where it will not fit whole. On the waterfront, the elevator is the key: book it for the full move window, and ask whether the building wants wall pads or floor protection.

Your own car after the move

To park overnight on Weehawken streets you need a resident sticker from the Parking Authority. Its application asks for documents that show you live in Weehawken; visitor permits need a photo ID and two current Weehawken proofs of residency (Weehawken Parking Authority: permit application). Visitors must park in the color zone of the home they are visiting (Weehawken Parking Authority: zones). If you are new to New Jersey, the state gives you 60 days to transfer an out-of-state license and registration (NJ MVC). Our Hudson County resident parking guide compares Weehawken with the towns around it.

Licensed for your move

A move that starts and ends in New Jersey is an in-state move. State law requires movers who do in-state moves to be licensed by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, and you can check any mover’s license by calling the Division at (800) 242-5846 (NJ Division of Consumer Affairs). A & A Alliance Moving Inc, a family business since 1999, holds NJPM 000930 for New Jersey moves, NYSDOT 34875 for New York moves, and U.S. DOT 967970 / MC-432549 for moves between states (FMCSA record).
