Moving to Union City or West New York, NJ: Parking and Permits

Union City and West New York sit side by side on top of the Palisades, just north of Hoboken and Weehawken. Streets are busy, many homes are walk-up apartments or two- and three-family houses, and curb space is tight. Both towns run resident permit parking, and both have rules that affect a moving truck. Here they are, town by town, with the official source for each.

Union City: what to know

  • No overnight truck parking. The Union City Parking Authority’s list of violations includes “No Truck Parking 9pm-7am” and no parking of commercial vehicles over 4,000 pounds from 9 PM to 7 AM (Union City Parking Authority: Permits). Plan to load and unload in daylight; the truck cannot wait on the street overnight.
  • Meter bags. The Parking Authority’s fee list includes parking meter bags by the day. If your door is on a metered block, ask the Authority whether a meter bag can hold space for the truck.
  • Permits are issued in person at the Parking Authority office, 506-518 38th Street (rooftop), between Kennedy Boulevard and Bergenline Avenue. The office does not take cash.
  • New residents can get a temporary permit with the vehicle’s registration, a driver’s license and a notarized lease or a utility service request receipt (for example from PSE&G). It lasts 30 days and cannot be renewed, so use that month to change the address on your license and registration.

West New York: what to know

  • Three-hour limit. Residential permit parking zones are in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A vehicle without a permit may park for up to three hours; staying longer needs a daily visitor permit (West New York Ordinance 20/20).
  • Service and commercial vehicles. The same ordinance lets the West New York Parking Services Utility allow service and commercial vehicles to park in permit zones for up to eight hours in a row. Residents must call the Utility to ask, with 24 to 48 hours of notice. For a move, make that call as soon as your date is set.
  • The office is at 224 60th Street. Posted hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 8 AM to 5 PM, Thursday 8 AM to 8 PM, Saturday 9 AM to 1 PM (Town of West New York: parking permits).
  • New residents can get a free two-week temporary permit while they change the address on their license and registration. Bring a signed lease or rental agreement.

Planning a move on the Palisades

Walk-ups are common here, so stairs often decide how long a move takes. Before your estimate, count the flights at both addresses, note tight landings, and measure your sofa, dresser, bed frame and other big pieces against the narrowest door. We take apart and put back beds, tables and other large pieces when stairs or doorways are tight. On busy shopping streets such as Bergenline Avenue, a weekday morning is often easier than a Saturday afternoon.

Because Union City bans trucks overnight and West New York limits a truck to a few hours in permit zones, a move that cannot finish in one day needs a plan for where the loaded truck waits. Tell us at the estimate if your move is large or has a long carry, and we will plan the day around it.

Coming from Manhattan? The Lincoln Tunnel is close by; trucks must fit its 13-foot height limit and cannot use the center tube (Port Authority Truckers Guide, April 2026). Our guide to moving from NYC to Hudson County covers the river crossing, and our Weehawken guide covers the town next door.

Your New Jersey license and registration

Moving here from another state? You must transfer your out-of-state license and your vehicle’s title and registration within 60 days of your move, or before they expire if that comes first (NJ MVC). Town parking permits ask for a license or registration with your new address, so start early. Our resident parking guide compares all the Hudson County towns.

Licensed for your move

A move that starts and ends in New Jersey is an in-state move. State law requires movers who do in-state moves to be licensed by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, and you can check any mover’s license by calling the Division at (800) 242-5846 (NJ Division of Consumer Affairs). A & A Alliance Moving Inc, a family business since 1999, holds NJPM 000930 for New Jersey moves, NYSDOT 34875 for New York moves, and U.S. DOT 967970 / MC-432549 for moves between states (FMCSA record).
