Hoboken or Jersey City to Westchester and Connecticut: What Movers Plan For

Many Hoboken and Jersey City families move north for more space: Westchester towns, or Fairfield County in Connecticut. The drive is easy in a car. In a moving truck, half of the familiar roads are off limits, and that changes the plan.

Crossing the Hudson

A moving truck heads north by the George Washington Bridge or crosses through the Lincoln Tunnel, where the Port Authority allows trucks in the outer tubes but not the center tube (Port Authority Truckers Guide (rates effective Jan 4, 2026)). Port Authority tolls are collected when entering New York (Port Authority Truckers Guide (rates effective Jan 4, 2026)). Inside the city, the Henry Hudson Parkway and the FDR Drive are closed to commercial vehicles (NYC DOT).

Westchester: parkways are closed to trucks

The Hutchinson River, Saw Mill River, Bronx River, Sprain Brook, Cross County and Taconic parkways are on New York State’s list of downstate parkways closed to commercial vehicles (NYSDOT). A moving truck uses interstates such as I-87, I-95, I-287 and I-684, which are open to commercial traffic (NYSDOT).

Connecticut: no trucks on the Merritt

Connecticut does not allow box trucks or rental trucks on the Merritt Parkway (Route 15, from the New York line in Greenwich to Exit 54 in Milford), and vehicles taller than 8 feet are not allowed on it (CT DOT). Moves into Greenwich, Stamford, Norwalk and towns beyond use I-95 or other highways that allow trucks.

Moving into a house

  • Tell us about the driveway, any slope, and how close the truck can park to the door.
  • Measure large pieces against doorways and stairs at the new house.
  • If the closing dates do not line up, ask about a move with storage in between.

Licensed for interstate moves

This move crosses a state line, so federal rules apply. A & A Alliance Moving Inc, a family business since 1999, holds U.S. DOT No. 967970 and MC-432549 for moves between states, plus NJPM 000930 and NYSDOT 34875. You can look up our record on the FMCSA website, and the federal guides Ready to Move? and Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move explain your rights on an interstate move.

After you arrive

New York gives new residents 30 days to exchange an out-of-state driver license (NY DMV). Connecticut gives new residents 90 days after establishing residency (CT DMV).
