After the boxes are in, the next question in Hudson County is usually: where do I park? Almost every town here has resident permit parking, and most of them want to see a New Jersey license or registration with your new address. Here is a short guide, town by town, with a link to each official page. Moving-day parking for the truck is a separate permit; see the end of this page.
Step one: your New Jersey license and registration
If you moved to New Jersey from another state, you must transfer your out-of-state license and your vehicle title and registration within 60 days of your move, or before they expire if that comes first (NJ MVC). Most towns’ resident permits ask for these documents with your new address, which is why several towns offer short temporary permits for new residents.
Hoboken
A resident permit needs a valid New Jersey driver’s license with your Hoboken address, plus a matching registration and proof of insurance. If you do not have that yet, you may qualify for a temporary permit while you change your address with the MVC; it asks for three documents that prove you live in Hoboken, such as a lease or a deed. Apply online with HPU Online or by appointment at City Hall. Hoboken no longer issues new decals; license plate readers check permits (City of Hoboken: Parking FAQs).
Jersey City
Resident permits are required for parking more than two hours in many areas, and posted signs show where. Applications are online from the city’s parking page (City of Jersey City: Parking). The city’s 2022 fee notice also lists a 14-day temporary residential permit (Jersey City fee notice).
Weehawken
Overnight parking needs a Weehawken resident sticker or visitor permit: from 9 PM on Boulevard East and from 10 PM on other streets, until 7 AM. In the daytime, cars without a permit get four hours (Weehawken Parking Authority). Apply to the Weehawken Parking Authority, 4200 Park Avenue, 201-863-1523; its application asks for documents that show you live in Weehawken.
Union City
Permits are issued in person at the Union City Parking Authority, 506-518 38th Street (rooftop), and the office does not take cash. A residential permit needs a New Jersey registration and driver’s license under the same name with a Union City address. New residents can get a 30-day temporary permit, which cannot be renewed, with a notarized lease or a utility service request receipt (Union City Parking Authority).
West New York
Permit zones apply 24 hours a day, and a car without a permit gets three hours (West New York Ordinance 20/20). Apply in person at 224 60th Street. New residents can get a free two-week temporary permit with a signed lease while they update their license and registration (Town of West New York).
North Bergen
Every resident must register their license plate to park a non-commercial vehicle in the township. New residents can register online for 60 days while they update their documents (North Bergen Parking Authority).
Secaucus
Applications are online only, there is no fee, and permits are mailed. You need your license and registration and, if your license does not show your Secaucus address, a proof of residency from the past three months (Secaucus Police Department).
Bayonne
Residents apply for a virtual permit online, in person or by mail, and the city says no permit is needed on weekends. People living in developments in a redevelopment area whose plan was adopted on or after January 15, 2015 are excluded from residential permits under Ordinance 7-17.8 (City of Bayonne: Parking Utility).
Moving day is a separate permit
A resident permit is for your car. The moving truck needs its own curb space, and each town handles that differently. Our town guides explain how: Hoboken, Jersey City, Weehawken, Union City and West New York, North Bergen and Secaucus and Bayonne. For a move inside one town, our same-town move checklist also helps.
Licensed for your move
A move that starts and ends in New Jersey is an in-state move. State law requires movers who do in-state moves to be licensed by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, and you can check any mover’s license by calling the Division at (800) 242-5846 (NJ Division of Consumer Affairs). A & A Alliance Moving Inc, a family business since 1999, holds NJPM 000930 for New Jersey moves, NYSDOT 34875 for New York moves, and U.S. DOT 967970 / MC-432549 for moves between states (FMCSA record).
